Great post, Lonnie! As a recognized super-affiliate, I can tell you that it’s important for most people wanting an online business to start with affiliate marketing before getting into the rest of the industry…

Why? Two main reasons – first you can concentrate on the most important online skill – learning how to drive targeted traffic – without worrying about creating products, salespages, etc.

But far more importantly it’ll show you quite quickly whether you’re cut out to work online and run your own work-at-home business. As you’ve shown, affiliate marketing takes time, effort and some investment financially. The financial investment can be very low initially, so the true test is whether you have the discipline to put in major, concentrated, focused effort on a consistent basis.

Without that effort, necessary in every aspect of online business, you won’t be successful online. And since affiliate marketing takes less specialized knowledge and money than the other areas of the biz, if you aren’t cut out to be a successful affiliate you won’t make it in the other areas of online commerce either – you’re best off using that time pursuing other pastimes and staying with your current job.

I agree signing up for an affiliate program is really easy but the difficult part is to understand what you need to do to drive targeted traffic and you have listed some great starting resources.

Great article!

You touched on the idea of finding out what your competition is doing, and this is a great easy way to quickly learn what is working. I think a lot of affiliate marketing beginners are not sure where to start, but if you look at the other marketers and see what they are doing, then just follow them (but do a little research a head of time to make sure they are successful at it).

Any form of Internet marketing is going to require work. Not many people seem to realize that though. There are so many ’so-called’ guru’s out there pitching products that are going to make you rich overnight with the push of the big red ‘easy’ button that most people going into Internet marketing don’t realize how much work it is really going to be.

However, with a lot of hard work, determination, and persistence it can be done.
